Sandra Lee Moore Scholarship
Sandy was born in Vallejo, California in 1954, she spent most of her youth in Carson City, Nevada, at the Stewart Indian School where her father was a coach. After graduating from high school, she attended Western Nevada Community College and the University of Nevada. Eight years later, still living in Carson and working at WNCC, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Home Economics and Nutrition from UNR. Sandy’s first job as nutrition director at a California nursing home was very disappointing, so when her folks told her in 1983 about an opening for a lunch program director in Elko County, she jumped on it. She was hired after her first meeting with then superintendent Chuck Knight, and moved into her new office, a converted janitor’s closet in Grammar School No. 2. The lunch program started with four kitchens, and under Sandy’s supervision over the next 30 years, grew to 17 across Elko County, from Carlin to Wendover and from Spring Creek to Owyhee. Sandy designed the Elko Central Kitchen where nutritious, low-cost meals could be prepped, frozen, and delivered to schools throughout the county. Sandy was truly dedicated to her work, her employees, and the kids of Elko County.
Sandy has been the chairperson for NSNA Certification for as long as any of us can remember. She updated us with continuing education units information each year for our conference.
NSNA would like to present the “Sandra Moore” Scholarship in her honor. Any interested party can apply. The Scholarship will cover your meals, lodging and registration to our NSNA Annual State Conference.
